Let Lightning Lanes guide your route

Before You Go: Disneyland Planning Tips

One of the biggest things to know is that Disneyland’s Lightning Lane system works a little differently than Walt Disney World. At Disneyland, you cannot book your first Lightning Lane until you have physically scanned into the park.

So our strategy was simple: get to the park early, scan in, book our first Lightning Lane immediately, and then let those reservations guide the flow of our day.

A huge pro tip: if you see a Lightning Lane time that doesn’t work perfectly with your schedule, book it anyway and try to modify it. Keep refreshing because earlier times pop up all the time. Also, after you use a Lightning Lane, immediately book your next one.

Our Biggest Disneyland Strategy

Do not try to ride the parks in perfect order. Instead, plan your day around your Lightning Lane reservations. If you have Indiana Jones booked, spend time in Adventureland, Frontierland, New Orleans Square, and Galaxy’s Edge. If you have Incredicoaster booked, explore Pixar Pier. This saves so many steps and makes the day feel way less chaotic.

Day 1: Start at Disneyland Park

We started our first day at Disneyland Park and rope dropped Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

This is one of the most popular rides in the park, so getting there early is key. Once we scanned into the park, we booked our first Lightning Lane for Indiana Jones Adventure.

While waiting for our return time, we explored nearby areas and rode attractions with lower wait times.

Our morning looked like this:

  • Rope drop Rise of the Resistance

  • Book Indiana Jones Lightning Lane

  • Ride Big Thunder Mountain

  • Explore Adventureland and Galaxy’s Edge

  • Shop around the park

  • Grab beignets from Tiana’s Palace

  • Stop for coffee, always

Best Coffee at Disneyland Park

Disneyland has some seriously good coffee options. These were our favorites:

  • Toffee Nut Cold Brew from Jolly Holiday

  • Cold Brew Black Caf from Docking Bay 7

  • Beignet Cold Brew from Tiana’s Palace

The Cold Brew Black Caf is especially fun because it comes with Cocoa Puffs on top. So cute and so good.

Hop to Disney California Adventure

After using our Indiana Jones Lightning Lane, we booked Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT! in Disney California Adventure.

We spent the rest of the morning at Disneyland Park and then hopped over to DCA around 11:00 or 11:30 a.m. Once we got to DCA, we rode Guardians, walked around the shops, took photos, and grabbed a quick hot dog. Quick-service food is such a good move when you want to keep the day moving. Next, we booked Incredicoaster, which gave us time to explore Pixar Pier, walk around the boardwalk, and take a little break.

Pin Trading Tip

We love opening mystery pin packs on Disney trips and trading with Cast Members. Some Cast Members even make it extra fun with trivia or little challenges before you trade.

At Disneyland, look for pin trading boards and shadow boxes. If you buy mystery pins and don’t love what you get, keep your receipt and original packaging. Some shadow box stations will let you trade same-day purchases as long as your exact pin is not already on the board. It makes the day feel like a cute little scavenger hunt.

Afternoon at DCA

Our next Lightning Lane was Goofy’s Sky School, and let us tell you, it was not what we expected. It feels like an old-school fair roller coaster, and it is way more intense than it looks.

After spending time in DCA until around 3:00 p.m., we headed back to Disneyland Park to catch the last daytime parade.

Pro tip: stand closer to the park entrance on Main Street. Most people crowd near the castle, so the entrance area can be a much better spot.

Back to Disneyland Park

After the parade, we booked a Lightning Lane for Space Mountain so we could explore Tomorrowland.

Pro tip: you can always ask to ride in the front or back row on certain attractions. It never hurts to ask!

Rides We Would Skip If You’re Short on Time

These are attractions we personally would skip if you are trying to maximize your day:

  • Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage

  • Autopia

  • Alice in Wonderland

  • Peter Pan’s Flight

  • Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride

  • Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin

  • Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue

Peter Pan’s Flight is classic, but the line is almost always long and the ride is very short. We would only prioritize it if it is nostalgic for you or you are visiting with little kids.

Evening at DCA: Radiator Springs Racers

Around 5:30 p.m., we headed back to DCA because we purchased a single Lightning Lane for Radiator Springs Racers.

It was around $20–$30 per person when we went, and honestly, it was worth it. It is one of the cutest and best rides in Disney California Adventure.

Cars Land is also magical around sunset and after dark when all the neon lights come on.

Best Snacks in Disney California Adventure

Some of our favorite DCA snacks and quick bites:

  • Bacon mac & cheese from Cozy Cone Motel

  • Sourdough bowls in San Fransokyo

  • Corn on the cob

  • Birria tacos

  • Waffles from Schmoozies

Honestly, San Fransokyo has so many good options.

Sunset Ferris Wheel Moment

We rode the Pixar Pal-A-Round closer to sunset, and it was so pretty. Just be careful because it can close early due to World of Color.

There is no Lightning Lane for this one, so plan accordingly.

After that, we booked Lightning Lanes for Soarin’ and Monsters, Inc. We thought Monsters, Inc. was cute, but we would probably skip it next time unless the wait was super short.

Dinner and Fireworks at Disneyland Park

Around 7:00 p.m., we headed back to Disneyland Park for dinner and to get a good spot for the fireworks.

It is so important to get there early because everyone wants to watch the fireworks in front of the castle.

Quick-service dinner spots we recommend:

  • The Golden Horseshoe: fish and chips, chicken tenders, mini corn dogs

  • Rancho del Zocalo: tacos, burritos, salads

  • Tiana’s Palace: cornbread, gumbo, chicken

For a more relaxed sit-down meal, make a reservation for:

  • Cafe Orleans

  • Blue Bayou Restaurant

We ended our first day after the fireworks around 10:00 p.m. so we had energy for day

two.

Day 2: Start at Disney California Adventure

On our second day, we started at Disney California Adventure right at park opening and rope dropped Guardians of the Galaxy.

This is one of our favorite rides, so starting the day with it was the best decision.

After that, we went to the Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Cappuccino Cart near San Fransokyo and got the Banoffee Cold Brew. It is banana, chocolate, and cold brew, and we promise even if you do not love coffee, you will probably love this one. It was our favorite coffee of the trip.

Morning Photo Time

We took advantage of the lower morning crowds to take photos in front of the Pixar Pal-A-Round and Incredicoaster.

Then we rode:

  • The Little Mermaid

  • Golden Zephyr

  • Guardians again with Lightning Lane

We also grabbed the Cookies & Cream Cold Brew from Pym Test Kitchen in Avengers Campus, right near Guardians and WEB SLINGERS.

Hop to Disneyland Park

Around 10:00 a.m., we headed back to Disneyland Park for our Lightning Lane on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

After that, we got another coffee at Docking Bay 7: the Cold Brew Black Caf with Cocoa Puffs on top.

We spent time walking around Galaxy’s Edge, taking in all the details, and playing on the Play Disney Parks app. If you are a Star Wars fan, definitely check it out. You can complete tasks, hack ships and panels, and interact with the land in such a fun way.

Winnie the Pooh Area

After Galaxy’s Edge, we walked toward the Winnie the Pooh area because we love Pooh.

The shop over there is so cute. We found Pooh ears, cute T-shirts, and lots of fun merch. The ride is also really sweet.

Fun fact: if you are the first person to ride Winnie the Pooh that day, you may get to sign a special book.

Lunch at Tiana’s Palace

We rode Big Thunder Mountain again, ran into some characters, and then had lunch at Tiana’s Palace.

This was one of our favorite meals. We honestly think Disneyland has some of the best food out of all the Disney parks. You can also check the Disneyland app for character times and locations throughout the day.

Castle Photos

After lunch, we went to the castle to take pictures.

Our best tip is to stand off to the sides instead of directly in the middle. You can usually get fewer people in the background and still have the castle beautifully behind you.

Then we watched the 3:00 p.m. daytime parade again before heading back to our hotel for a break.

Is a Hotel Break Worth It?

Yes, especially if you want to stay until midnight.

We know a lot of people want to maximize every second, but taking a short break helped us have so much more energy for the nighttime parade, fireworks, Fantasmic!, and late-night rides. We went back to our hotel, rested, and returned to the parks around 5:00 p.m.

Evening Back at DCA

We started again at Disney California Adventure, grabbed another Banoffee Cold Brew, and walked around Pixar Pier before our next Lightning Lane: Toy Story Midway Mania.

This ride is so cute and fun, especially if you are competitive.

After that, we did more pin trading and then rode Incredicoaster once it got dark. Riding it at night is such a different experience, and the pier is so cute with all the lights on.

Nighttime Parade at Disneyland Park

After DCA, we headed back to Disneyland Park to watch the nighttime parade.

We watched near the entrance on Main Street again, and it was such a good spot.

This is one of the cutest parades Disney does. The park lights go down, and the floats and costumes light up. It feels so magical and is definitely worth making time for.

Fireworks Ride Strategy

After the parade, we rode Indiana Jones and Big Thunder Mountain while the fireworks were happening.

Riding Big Thunder during the fireworks is such a magical Disney moment.

Then we went to watch Fantasmic! near the Frontierland river area.

Pro tip: unlike Walt Disney World, there is no traditional seating for Fantasmic! at Disneyland. It is first come, first served, so get there early because it fills up quickly.

After Fantasmic!, we used a Lightning Lane for Space Mountain, shopped on Main Street one last time, and then exited the park.

Best Disneyland Coffee Ranked

If you love coffee like we do, save this list.

  1. Banoffee Cold Brew — Cappuccino Cart near San Fransokyo

  2. Cold Brew Black Caf — Docking Bay 7

  3. Beignet Cold Brew — Tiana’s Palace

  4. Toffee Nut Cold Brew — Jolly Holiday

  5. Cookies & Cream Cold Brew — Pym Test Kitchen

Best overall: Banoffee Cold Brew

Best themed coffee: Cold Brew Black Caf

Best sweet coffee: Beignet Cold Brew

Best Photo Spots

Our favorite picture spots in both parks:

  • Sleeping Beauty Castle

  • Pixar Pier

  • Incredicoaster area

  • Pixar Pal-A-Round

  • Cars Land at sunset or nighttime

  • Main Street early in the morning

  • Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

  • Tiana’s Palace area

  • San Fransokyo

  • Winnie the Pooh shop area

Favorite Rides

Disneyland Park

  • Rise of the Resistance

  • Indiana Jones Adventure

  • Space Mountain

  • Big Thunder Mountain

  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run

  • Winnie the Pooh

Disney California Adventure

  • Guardians of the Galaxy

  • Radiator Springs Racers

  • Incredicoaster

  • Toy Story Midway Mania

  • Soarin’

Best Shows and Where to Watch

  • For the daytime parade, we recommend watching near the entrance on Main Street because most people crowd near the castle.

  • For fireworks, get your spot early if you want a castle view.

  • For the nighttime parade, Main Street near the entrance is also a great option.

  • For Fantasmic!, arrive early because it is first come, first served and fills up fast.

  • For World of Color, check the Disneyland app for current viewing options and timing.

Downtown Disney

We visited Downtown Disney on our travel days, which worked perfectly.

It is not huge, but there are restaurants, Disney stores, and fun places to walk around. It is a great way to get a little extra Disney magic without using park time.

Was Lightning Lane Worth It?

Yes, absolutely. With only two days, Lightning Lane helped us ride so much more while still having time for food, coffee, photos, shopping, parades, and breaks.

Our biggest tip is to book your next Lightning Lane immediately after scanning into your current one.

Is Radiator Springs Racers Worth Paying Extra For?

Yes!! It was one of our favorite rides of the entire trip. Cars Land is so immersive, and the ride is fun, cute, and exciting. If you are only going to buy one single Lightning Lane, we would choose this one.

Extra Disneyland Pro Tips

  • Bring a portable charger because the Disneyland app, photos, videos, mobile ordering, and Lightning Lane reservations will drain your battery.

  • Mobile order food whenever possible to save time.

  • Wear comfortable shoes because you will walk a lot.

  • Check the app often for ride closures, wait times, character locations, and entertainment schedules.

  • Let your Lightning Lanes guide your route instead of walking back and forth across the parks.

  • Take castle photos from the sides to avoid crowds.

  • Watch parades closer to the Main Street entrance instead of the castle.

  • Ride Incredicoaster at night.

  • Ride Big Thunder during the fireworks.

  • Explore Cars Land after dark.

  • Keep your receipts and packaging if you want to use pin trading shadow boxes.

  • Ask for the front or back row on rides if you have a preference.

  • Take a hotel break if you want to stay until park close.

Is Two Days Enough for Disneyland?

Yes, we think two days is the perfect amount of time for Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, especially with Park Hopper and Lightning Lane.

We were able to ride our favorite attractions, visit both parks each day, watch the parades, see the fireworks, watch Fantasmic!, eat at our favorite spots, try so many fun coffees, pin trade, shop, take pictures, and still enjoy the parks without feeling too rushed.

If it is your first trip to Disneyland California, this is the exact style of itinerary we would recommend. It gives you the perfect mix of rides, food, entertainment, photo spots, and Disney magic.

We hope this guide helps make your trip just a little more magical.
